Fantasy Football Week 4 Rankings: Tight end

Jordan Reed and Tyler Eifert officially sat out because of injuries last week; Travis Kelce and Hunter Henry basically did the same despite being totally healthy. Oh, and Marcedes Lewis, who's still in the league and starting at tight end for the Jaguars, caught three touchdowns against the Ravens. So, yes, our Week 4 fantasy rankings for TE are a mess...how are things with you?

Unless you own Rob Gronkowski or Zach Ertz, things are likely suboptimal, at least when it comes to your TE situation. There were some bright spots last week, like Jimmy Graham bouncing back and both Benjamin Watson and David Njoku fighting for tight end supremacy in the AFC North, but this position remains a problem area for most owners every week.

This week, we're putting Reed (chest, toe) and Eifert (back, knee) in our initial rankings, but obviously neither is a sure thing to play. If Reed is out, Vernon Davis becomes a legit sleeper who's likely as good of an option as anyone in the bottom half of our TE1 tier.

Week 4 Fantasy Football Rankings: TE

7
Jordan Reed, Redskins @ Chiefs. Reed's health is certainly in question as he deals with shoulder, toe, and chest injuries, but if he plays, it's tough to sit him. Kansas City struggled with similar high-target TE Zach Ertz in Week 2, so Reed could easily rack up catches and yards.

These rankings are for standard, non-PPR leagues

1

Rob Gronkowski, Patriots vs. Panthers

2

Travis Kelce, Chiefs vs. Redskins. After only one catch and one yard last week, Kelce's rep takes a bit of a hit, but the Redskins have allowed either 90 yards or a TD to a tight end every week this year. Expect a big bounce back.

3

Zach Ertz, Eagles @ Chargers

4

Kyle Rudolph, Vikings vs. Lions. Rudolph's targets are way down from last year, but it would be silly to write him off. The Lions' troubles against tight ends haven't been exploited as much this year, but it helps that they've played two teams that don't use their TEs much (Arizona, Atlanta). Rudolph had at least 6.1 fantasy points in both games against Detroit last year, and his upside is even higher.

5

Martellus Bennett, Packers vs. Bears

6

Coby Fleener, Saints vs. Dolphins (in London). Miami struggled mightily against TEs in its first game, allowing 80 yards to Hunter Henry and a touchdown to Antonio Gates. Willie Snead's return from suspension could cut into Fleener's targets, but this is a solid matchup for him.

8

Delanie Walker, Titans @ Texans

9

Charles Clay, Bills @ Falcons. Atlanta has done a good job correcting their TE troubles from last season, but we're still not entirely convinced their a "bad" matchup for a TE who gets as many targets as Clay. At six targets a game -- and likely his team's top target in the red zone -- Clay always has upside.

10

Jimmy Graham, Seahawks vs. Colts. Graham seemingly got back on track last week with 11 targets and 72 yards, though it was a unique situation in which Doug Baldwin got hurt and the Seahawks were in garbage-time catch-up mode. On the plus side, Graham looked healthy, and this Colts matchup is inviting. Indy hasn't played any proven TEs this year (Rams, Cardinals, Browns), so it's tough to assess how they defend the position, but we know they give up their fair share of yards and points overall.

11

Julius Thomas, Dolphins vs. Saints (in London). Thomas hasn't done much of anything this year, catching six of eight targets for 42 yards. The Saints provide a favorable matchup, though, having allowed a TE TD in two of the first three games. When dealing with a position like tight end, sometimes you just have to play the matchup and trust talent. Thomas isn't what he used to be, but he still has upside.

12

Jason Witten, Cowboys vs. Rams. Witten crashed hard last week after looking like one of the top tight ends in Weeks 1 and 2. That was somewhat predictable given the matchup, but it was discouraging to see his targets drop to four. He will likely get more this week, but it's another tough matchup against a Rams' defense that's limited TEs to just 5.7 fantasy points per game (FPPG).

13

Evan Engram, Giants at Bucs. Engram continues to see consistent targets and has produced between 44 and 49 yards in every game this year. He's establishing a pretty safe floor, and even if his ceiling doesn't seem as high as others, he's a nice guy to plug in at a position where even top players can give you zeroes

14

Hunter Henry, Chargers vs. Eagles. Zero targets in two of three games -- not good. But sandwiched in between was an seven-catch, 80-yard performance. Henry is the definition of a boom-or-bust player at this point. We're not ready to write him off completely, but obviously he's extremely tough to trust. The Eagles were roasted by Jordan Reed but held down Rob Gronkowski and Evan Engram, so this is a boom-or-bust matchup, too.

15

Tyler Kroft, Bengals @ Browns. The Browns defense surprisingly shut down Jack Doyle last week. The odds they do it twice in a row? Slim. Kroft is obviously a total wild card as he takes over for Tyler Eifert, but similar TEs have had success against them (Jesse James, Benjamin Watson), so he looms as a major sleeper.

16

Ed Dickson, Panthers at Patriots. Dickson saw just one target in his first week in the starting lineup, but his outlook is significantly better against a Patriots defense that's allowed a TE touchdown in every game this season.

17

Jack Doyle, Colts @ Seahawks. If he couldn't do it against the Browns, do we really think he can do it against the Seahawks? Doyle will likely to convert in garbage time to pay off this week, but he's at least a primary target on his team.

18

Marcedes Lewis, Jaguars @ Jets. Lewis's three-TD Week 3 was a fluke, but a matchup against the Jets gives him opportunity for another decent game.

19

Benjamin Watson, Ravens vs. Steelers. We expect a decent amount of targets, but the matchup is suboptimal. Take away a garbage-time touchdown in Week 3, and Watson has done nothing in non-Browns' matchups.

20

Cameron Brate, Bucs vs. Giants

21

David Njoku, Browns vs. Bengals

22

Zach Miller, Bears @ Packers

23

Jared Cook, Raiders @ Broncos

24

Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Jets vs. Jaguars

25

Eric Ebron, Lions @ Vikings

26

Ryan Griffin, Texans vs. Titans

27

Austin Hooper, Falcons vs. Bills

28

Antonio Gates, Chargers vs. Eagles

29

Jesse James, Steelers @ Ravens

30

Gerald Everett, Rams @ Cowboys

31

O.J. Howard, Bucs vs. Giants

32

George Kittle, 49ers @ Cardinals
