2017 Vehicle Dependability Study: Most Dependable Trucks
J.D. Power publishes the U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) on an annual basis. The study summarizes what original owners of 3-year-old vehicles tell the company has gone right and wrong with their cars, trucks, SUVs, and minivans. Owners are asked to report all design- and defect-related problems they experienced during the previous 12 months.
This information serves as the basis for Power Circle Ratings that reflect a vehicle’s dependability. An easily understood visual representation of how a model performs in comparison to others in a particular vehicle segment, these Power Circle Ratings help consumers make an informed decision about purchasing a vehicle.
This buyer’s guide highlights those pickup truck models that receive a Power Circle Rating of 4 or 5 out of a possible 5 for vehicle dependability after 3 years of ownership.
2014 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty
Built to tow plenty of weight and carry heavy loads, the Silverado Heavy Duty was offered in 2500HD and 3500HD series and in a variety of trim levels ranging from basic to luxurious. In 2014, the new bi-fuel compressed natural gas powertrain that was slated for 2013 finally arrived for the 2500HD crew cab model. Versions of the truck with gasoline engines received a 4.10 rear axle for dramatically improved standard towing capacity, and a spray-in bedliner was a new option. A turbodiesel engine was also offered for the Silverado HD.

2014 Ford F-150
In its final year before a complete redesign, the Ford F-150 added a Tremor sport truck variant that installed a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine in a regular cab body style. Other changes were minor, ranging from a new grille with the FX Appearance package to new Marina Blue leather for the F-150 Limited. At the lower end of the spectrum, a new STX SuperCrew model debuted, along with a new STX Sport package.
The 2014 Ford F-150 receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5 and receives a dependability award in the Large Light Duty Pickup segment.
2014 Ford F-Series Super Duty
The F-Series Super Duty continued for 2014 in F-250, F-350, and F-450 model series and in a wide variety of trim levels powered by a choice between a gasoline V-8 and turbodiesel V-8. Ford’s aging workhorse saw minor changes for 2014, including braking system improvements and more equipment for selected trim levels and option packages.

2014 GMC Sierra Heavy Duty
Essentially the same truck as the Chevrolet Silverado HD but with styling specific to GMC, the 2014 Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD saw few changes aside from a new 4.10 axle as standard equipment for gasoline engines, a spray-in bedliner option, and a bi-fuel compressed natural gas engine that had been delayed by nearly a year. GMC also offered a turbodiesel engine for the Sierra HD and, specific to this lineup, the luxurious Denali trim level added unique styling details and a full load of standard equipment.
The 2014 GMC Sierra Heavy Duty receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.
2014 Honda Ridgeline
To commemorate the final year of production for this version of the Ridgeline, Honda introduced a Special Edition version of the truck loaded with every option. Featuring a polarizing design but undeniably superior comfort and practicality, compared with other midsize pickup trucks, the Ridgeline was the perfect truck for everything except towing and serious off-roading.
The 2014 Honda Ridgeline receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5 and receives a dependability award in the Midsize Pickup segment.
2014 Nissan Frontier
A rugged, body-on-frame pickup in production since 2005 with very few changes, the Nissan Frontier received a number of updates in 2014. Several trim levels gained additional standard equipment and the NissanConnect infotainment systems added features and improvements. New aluminum wheel designs debuted, too. Engine bays continued to contain a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or a 4.0-liter V-6 engine paired with a manual or automatic transmission and rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive.

2014 Toyota Tundra
Toyota gave the 2014 Tundra its first significant refresh since the truck’s 2007 redesign. New styling, a new interior with new seats, retuned steering and suspension, and upgraded safety and infotainment systems made the 2014 Tundra more competitive with other half-ton trucks. Toyota continued to offer a choice between a V-6 engine and two V-8 engines, and the lineup included SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition trim levels in three different body styles.
