Watson intends to opt out of the final year ($1.04 million) of his contract with the Nets in order to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, the New York Post reports.
Recommendation: Watson has a player option for the 2013-14 campaign, which he intends to turn down as he likely seeks a gig that affords more playing time. True, he was the primary backup to Deron Williams this past season, averaging 6.8 points (on 41.8 percent shooting), 2.0 assists, 1.8 rebounds, 1.1 three-pointers, and 0.8 steals in 19.0 minutes. However, the minutes load was slightly less than his career mark (20.3), and considering his career-high 41.1 percent from beyond the arc this year, he may be able to procure a multi-year deal with the promise of a larger role.
