Freddy Sanchez singled home Brian Bixler with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. Sanchez went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and is 9-for-17 in four games since being moved to the top of the Pirates' lineup. The Pirates decided to go with more experience on their bench Thursday by acquiring veteran outfielder Jason Michaels from Cleveland in a trade for a player to be named.
Rookie outfielder Nyjer Morgan, who had not started a game since April 11, was optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis.
Michaels, who was designated for assignment by the Indians on Tuesday, is expected to join the Pirates when they host Atlanta on Friday night in the opener of a four-game series.
Michaels, 32, hit .207 with nine RBIs in 21 games for the Indians this season. He has a .277 career batting average with 37 home runs and 203 RBIs in 632 games over eight seasons with Philadelphia (2001-06) and Cleveland (2007-08).
