Red Sox acquire first baseman/left fielder Garrett Cooper from Cubs

With Triston Casas potentially sidelined for months by a costal cartilage tear in his ribcage, the Red Sox acquired first baseman/left fielder leftfielder Garrett Cooper from the Cubs for cash considerations. The deal was hammered out in old-school fashion on Friday night, when Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer visited the Red Sox baseball operations suite during the Cubs-Red Sox game. Cooper, 33, was hitting .270/.341/.432 (though with a 32 percent strikeout rate) in 12 games for the Cubs when he was designated for assignment to clear a spot for first baseman Matt Mervis.
