The Orioles were said to be considering former starter Jake Arrieta and Rule 5 pick T.J. McFarland for what would have been a spot start.
Instead, the Orioles will turn -- much sooner than many would have anticipated -- to the former LSU standout. He and fellow right-hander Dylan Bundy are widely considered the club's best prospects.
Gausman, 22, is 2-4 with a 3.11 ERA in eight starts for the Baysox. He had 49 strikeouts and five walks in 46.1 innings pitched.
The polished, tall righty required just 13 minor league games. Whether he simply makes a spot start or is up for the long run will depend on his performance Thursday against a talented Toronto lineup.
