Detective Sgt. Kevin Stolinsky of the La Vergne Police Department died Friday afternoon on duty due to a medical incident, a city spokesperson announced.

La Vergne Mayor Jason Cole, who knew Stolinsky, described him as a police officer that transcended his role in law enforcement.

"He was one of the best of us," Cole said. "He constantly fought to make things better for others. Wasn't for himself. He was always fighting for other people, and always trying to make any situation (better), whether it was work or life.

"Kevin was known and loved in this community. Everyone knew him. He was at every event. He was at the parades. He was at every city event. He wasn't just a police officer."

Stolinsky joined the police department in 2001.

Kandice Crutcher, who runs Club Knockout FOP, a nonprofit boxing gym, with her husband, Robert, said she spoke several times in recent days with Stolinsky. He was excited about helping with Christmas for local children and seniors in need.

"He was a very good man," Crutcher said. "Every time he stopped by the boxing gym or spoke to me on the phone, the first thing he would always ask was how the kids at the gym were and if they needed anything at all to please not to hesitate to let him know."

Stolinsky served as the treasurer for the organization.

"Kevin was such a beautiful person, always committed to doing the right thing," wrote Kathy Tyson, a former co-worker, on Facebook. "I’m so deeply sorry for his family. My sincere condolences to his police family, as well, and everyone at the city who knew him and worked with him."
