Zumbrota-Mazeppa, Lake City have sights set on return trips to state Dance Team meet

Feb. 9—Dance teams from Zumbrota-Mazeppa and Lake City are among the Section 1 teams that will attempt to defend their section championships — and earn trips to next week's state meet — this weekend across southeastern Minnesota.

The Section 1, Class 1A meet is set for Saturday at Lake City, with the 1-2A meet to be held at Kasson-Mantorville High School and the 1-3A meet to take place at Bloomington Kennedy High School.

Here's a look at each of the Section 1 meets and the teams to watch on Saturday:

When: 8 a.m. Saturday

Where: Lake City High School

Teams competing: Cannon Falls, Chatfield, Dover-Eyota, Fillmore Central/Lanesboro, Goodhue, Houston, Lake City, Plainview-Elgin-Millville, Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson, Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Southland, St. Charles, Triton/Hayfield, Wabasha-Kellogg, Zumbrota-Mazeppa.

Defending section champions: Zumbrota-Mazeppa (Jazz), Lake City (Kick).

Jazz division notes: According to the 2023-24 leaderboard at dancefo.com, the top Section 1-1A teams this season, with average scores in parentheses, have been Zumbrota-Mazeppa (67.5), Cannon Falls (59.7) and Wabasha-Kellogg (59.7). ... Z-M's average of 67.5 is 3 points higher than it had as a team at this time a year ago and ranks No. 2 in the state in Class 1A. Cannon Falls and Wabasha-Kellogg are tied for the No. 9 ranking in the state in Class 1A. ... Z-M won the Hiawatha Valley League championship on Jan. 26. ... Wabasha-Kellogg won the Three Rivers Conference championship on Jan. 19. ... Cannon Falls and Zumbrota-Mazeppa were two of six finalists at last year's state meet.

High Kick division notes: According to the 2023-24 leaderboard at dancefo.com, the top Section 1-1A teams this season, with average scores in parentheses, have been Cannon Falls (66.5, a 3.4-point increase from last season), Zumbrota-Mazeppa (65.5), Wabasha-Kellogg (63.9) and Lake City (63.9). Those averages all are among the top 10 in the state; Cannon Falls is sixth, Z-M seventh and W-K and Lake City tied for ninth. ... Zumbrota-Mazeppa was one of six state finalists last season. ... Cannon Falls on the Hiawatha Valley League championship meet on Jan. 26. ... Wabasha-Kellogg won the Three Rivers Conference meet on Jan. 19, with St. Charles a close second.

Teams competing: Albert Lea, Apple Valley, Austin, Byron/Lourdes, Fairmont, Faribault, Kasson-Mantorville, Northfield, Simley, South St. Paul, Stewartville, TCU/LeSueur-Henderson, Winona.

2023 section champions: New Prague (Jazz), Faribault (Kick).

Jazz division notes: Last year's section champion, New Prague, has moved up to Section 1, Class 3A this season. ... According to the 2023-24 leaderboard at dancefo.com, the top Section 1-2A teams this season, with average scores in parentheses, have been Austin (68.8), South St. Paul (65.9) and Northfield (61.3). ... Austin is the lone Section 1-2A team whose average score is in the top 10 in the state (8th). ... New Prague was the only state finalist from Section 1 last season.

High Kick division notes: Faribault is the defending section champion. The Falcons have the second-best average score in Section 1 this season, at 69.5, good for ninth in the state in Class 2A. Austin leads the section this winter at 76.0, the fourth-best average in the state. Albert Lea (64.4) and Northfield (64.3) are a close third and fourth. ... Austin won the Big Nine Conference meet, followed by Faribault.

Teams competing: Burnsville, Eagan, Eastview, Farmington, Lakeville North, Lakeville South, Owatonna, Prior Lake, Century, John Marshall, Mayo, Rosemount.

Defending section champions: Eastview (Jazz, Kick).

Jazz division notes: Eastview was a state finalist a year ago, placing third. ... According to the 2023-24 leaderboard at dancefo.com, the top Section 1-3A teams this season, with average scores in parentheses, have been Eastview (90.3), Lakeville North (85.1), Lakeville South (82.2) and Eagan (80.7). Century is ninth in the section in average score, while John Marshall is 11th. ... Owatonna placed third at the Big Nine Conference championship.

High Kick division notes: Eastview is the defending Section 1-3A and Class 3A state champion. ... According to the 2023-24 leaderboard at dancefo.com, the top Section 1-3A teams this season, with average scores in parentheses, have been Eastview (87.0), Lakeville North (84.8) and Lakeville South (78.6). Century is eighth in the section in average score, JM is 11th.
