Chara confirms friendship with fellow ex-Boston star Tom Brady originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Very few professional athletes know what it's like to be the face of a franchise in a city as sports-mad as Boston.

It seems like that unique experience has created a strong bond between two Boston legends, ex-New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and the recently departed Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara.

Following Wednesday's announcement that Chara would be joining the Washington Capitals on a one-year deal, heartfelt farewells poured in, including from Brady.

Chara, speaking with reporters on Thursday, confirmed that he and the six-time Super Bowl champion Brady are indeed friends.

After being drafted by the Patriots in 2000, Brady spent 20 years in New England, the most any NFL quarterback has spent with one team. Fourteen of those years overlapped with Chara's tenure for the Bruins.

The 43-year-old defenseman captained the Bruins for all 14 seasons, leading them to three Stanley Cup appearances and a victory in 2011 that snapped their 39-year title drought.

Both Brady and Chara leave behind strong legacies in Boston, but their friendship, it appears, will continue on.
