How do Zach Wilson and Mac Jones stack up ahead of Jets-Patriots rematch?

Zach Wilson and Mac Jones have had very different rookie seasons so far.

While the Patriots’ Jones has played efficient football with shorter passing attempts, the Jets’ Wilson ranks among the NFL’s worst in a number of important stats.

Wilson vs. Jones won’t be decided during their rookie campaigns, but the Jets and Patriots will be affected by this Week 7 matchup. The Jets are only one game behind the Patriots with a 1-4 record against New England’s 2-4 record.

With Wilson and Jones about to clash for a second time, here’s a breakdown of how the young quarterbacks compare thus far.

Jones has the slight lead over Wilson in the passing yards department. He averages 245.3 passing yards per game compared to Wilson’s 223.4. The two have similar passing yards per attempt, as well: 7.0 yards for Jones and 6.5 for Wilson.

Completion percentage

Jones and Wilson are on opposite ends of the competition percentage spectrum. The Patriots quarterback ranks fourth in the league with a 71.1 competition percentage, while Wilson is 31st with a 57.3 percent mark. Jones could break Dak Prescott’s 2016 rookie record if he continues to play at such an efficient level.

Passing touchdowns

Jones has thrown for a touchdown in five of his six games as a pro and has seven total. The only time Jones didn’t throw for a touchdown was, coincidentally, against the Jets. Wilson, meanwhile, only has four scores to his name after throwing two touchdowns against the Panthers and Titans.

Turnovers

Of all the categories on this list, turnovers are the worst one to lead in and Wilson owns the edge over Jones. He’s thrown a league-high nine interceptions. Jones isn’t far behind Wilson, though. He’s thrown six interceptions – all in the past four games – and lost a fumble for seven total turnovers.

Yards per completion

Wilson’s gunslinger style puts him in the middle of the NFL with 11.4 yards per completion – tied for 18th in the league. Jones isn’t known to air it out and ranks 29th with 9.8 yards per competition.
