Yellowjackets, Blugolds play to a red-hot tie
Sep. 4—SUPERIOR — On a red-hot Sunday, Sept. 3 at NBC Spartan Sports Complex, the Wisconsin-Superior men's soccer team pulled out a 1-1 draw against a Wisconsin-Eau Claire side reduced to 10 men in the second half.
The game, which was pushed back several hours to mitigate the effects of a 90-plus degree heat wave in the Twin Ports, was scoreless through the first half.
The first big moment came in the 57th minute, when UWEC goalkeeper Spencer Banks was red-carded, leaving his team shorthanded for the rest of the day. That didn't seem to matter much, as the Blugolds scored the game's first goal less than three minutes later via Carter Thiesfeld.
UWS responded in the 76th minute on a headed equalizer from Karsen Kletti. Both sides threatened in the closing minutes but UWS's season-opener ended with honors even.
UWS goalkeeper Alex Paredes made five saves. The Yellowjackets (0-0-1) travel to face St. John's on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
