Dec. 11—Though The Yellow Orchid has been officially open for a little over a week, the business, located at 7327 Center St. in Mentor, will hold its grand opening on from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 11.

Described as an eclectic, intimate space by shop owners Joanne Kosztolnyik and Bonnie Velikonya, The Yellow Orchid features one-of-a-kind items, curated corners and thoughtfully merchandised displays, in addition to vintage decor, antiques, collectibles, furniture and more.

Kosztolnyik and Velikonya have been selling items together at a local co-op for six years, all the while attending flea markets, estate sales, auctions, and yard and garage sales to find what they characterize as hidden treasures.

"The farthest place I've found items has been in Indiana, where I take an annual trip to every year and find great things," Velikonya said. "My husband and I go on the (Route) 127 Yard Sale every August — my favorite way to find unique items."

Sometimes, Kosztolnyik and Velikonya will even restore a piece that they feel is extra special.

"We love the idea of saving items from a landfill and a good bargain is a bonus," said Velikonya, adding she and Kosztolnyik have always dreamed of owning their own store. "We also have many friends and family who donate their items to us."

When asked how they came up with the name of the shop, Velikonya said, with a smile, "It just came to me one day and became something I liked. The color yellow is associated with new beginnings, joy and friendship, and we put our creativity and love into this, so the meaning is perfect for this new chapter of our lives that Joanne and I are embarking on."

The pair took possession of the 1,000-square-foot former bridal shop in October, securing their plans to be set up before Christmas.

"We were looking for a cute place in Mentor, so when this one became available we jumped on it," Velikonya said. "We have no employees, but we do have several others selling their items.

Highlights of the shop also include an entire room dedicated to Christmas, old-fashioned pieces and jewelry, and a children's corner.
