Yankees won't start Torres (knee) vs. Angels

Rookie phenom Gleyber Torres will be held out of the starting lineup to rest an ailing knee as the New York Yankees take on the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, manager Aaron Boone announced.

Torres homered for the fourth straight game Friday night in a 2-1 win over the Angels, but tweaked the knee diving for a line drive in the third inning of that game.

He came up limping after the play, but it didn't keep him from hitting the game-winning home run in the seventh inning Friday or from playing all nine innings of a 11-4 loss on Saturday night.

It was his fifth homer in six games and ninth since making his major league debut April 22 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

At 21 years, 163 days, Torres became the youngest player in American League history to homer in four straight games and fourth youngest in the majors to do so, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The youngest player in the majors to accomplish the feat is Miguel Cabrera, who was 20 years, 362 days when he did it for the then-Florida Marlins in 2004.

The quick turnaround was a factor in Boone's decision, who added that Torres could still see action.

"Just the day game after the night game," Boone said. "That ball he dove for a couple nights ago, just kind of banged up his knee a little bit. He could've absolutely played and will be available today. But it was just something we felt like, day game after the night game, it would be best to give him a blow.

"He said he was good, but really didn't balk either at the idea of getting a day today. So I think the day game after the night game had a lot to do with it."

Neil Walker will start at second base in Torres' place and bat eighth in the order.
