If this Wild Card Round series between the Yankees and Indians goes to Game 3, manager Aaron Boone knows who he is giving the ball to.
J.A. Happ will be that man Boone trusts in the do-or-die situation, as the veteran lefty has had a great bounce-back season in 2020.
Happ wasn't a part of the Yankees' postseason rotation plans last year, as he was subject to the bullpen. He owned a 4.91 ERA in 30 starts in 2019, so Luis Severino, James Paxton and Masahiro Tanaka made up the rotation when October came around.
The Yankees obviously don't want things to get to Game 3, but even if it doesn't go to three games, that announcement from Boone is a good endorsement that Happ would be his man in the ALDS if and when that happens. Deivi Garcia and Jordan Montgomery are also options there.
Gerrit Cole gets the ball in Game 1 while Masahiro Tanaka will get the start on Wednesday night in Cleveland.
