Yankees LHP Montgomery set for Tommy John surgery

New York Yankees left-hander Jordan Montgomery will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on Thursday.

Montgomery was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a flexor strain in his throwing elbow after exiting his May 1 start against the Houston Astros seven pitches in with elbow tightness. He returned to New York to be examined by the team doctor, where it was determined he would sit six to eight weeks while initially appearing to have dodged Tommy John surgery.

"Not great news, but it's not worst-case news either," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said at the time.

Montgomery will be out at least a full year following Thursday's procedure. In six starts this season, Montgomery went 2-0 with a 3.62 ERA. The 25-year-old went 9-7 with a 3.88 ERA in 29 starts as rookie last year for New York.

The Yankees enter play Tuesday with the second-best record in the American League at 38-18, though their starting pitching ranks 15th in the majors with a 4.07 ERA. Rookie Domingo German, Montgomery's replacement, is 0-3 with a 6.33 ERA in five starts since being moved to the rotation.
