Yahoo Golf Talk: Bermuda Championship

·2 min read

Taking our last glance at the Bermuda Championship before the event kicks off on Thursday morning, let's look at the previous winners here to see what they can tell us.

Brendon Todd won the 2019-20 Bermuda Championship and Brian Gay won last year.

What do they do well? Historically, they are two of the straightest shooters off the tee and they can also heat up the putter with the best of them.

Let's look at those two angles to see if we can find any value options for our Yahoo DFS rosters.

Precision, not Power

As we just saw with the two previous champions at this course, power is not a requirement, by any means.

Using the NBC Sports EDGE+ Driver Tool, we can find the most accurate drivers in the field. I will add Strokes Gained - Fairways Hit to the filter and then set the time filter to the last six months:

Ryan Armour
Brian Stuard
Kramer Hickok
Matthew Fitzpatrick
Hayden Buckley
Russell Knox
Mito Pereira
J.J. Spaun
David Lipsky
Chad Ramey
Vaughn Taylor
Mark Hubbard
Chase Seiffert
Adam Hadwin
Bo Hoag

Chad Ramey ($36): He was one of the most consistent KFT players last season and he's picking up some steam after missing the cut in start one this season. Ramey has rebounded with a T63 and T14 in his last two starts and now he gets a course that should reward his steady striking. Ramey ranked 4th in driving accuracy last season on the Korn Ferry circuit.

Performance on Bermudagrass Greens

This week's course, Port Royal, is a coastal course with bermudagrass turf.

Golfers that grew up or currently reside in the Southeast may feel a bit more comfortable than the West Coasters.

Let's look at the last two seasons of data and see what golfers have gained the most strokes gained per round when playing on bermuda greens:

Matthew Fitzpatrick
Christiaan Bezuidenhout
Denny McCarthy
Patrick Reed
Tommy Gainey
Peter Uihlein
David Hearn
David Lingmerth
Vincent Whaley
Ricky Barnes
Vaughn Taylor
Austin Cook
Alex Smalley
Patrick Rodgers
Kiradech Aphibarnrat

Alex Smalley ($21): The Duke product is still searching for some consistency but he brings appeal via the low-round upside. Smalley already has four rounds in his young PGA TOUR career where he has lapped the field average by at least four shots. Two of those have come at the Corales, another coastal venue. The other two came on bermudagrass greens so there is plenty of upside with Smalley, despite his $21 price tag.

Hopefully, these stats will give you some names to dive into when it comes to researching your final selections this week over at Yahoo!
