WVU Tech teams return home Tuesday

Jan. 22—After a four-game road stretch that covered a two-week period, WVU Tech will be back in Beckley this week.

The two-game homestand for both the men and women begins Tuesday when Midway visits the Convention Center. The women will tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.

The young women's team (4-13, 1-6 River States Conference), under first-year head coach Ashley Brown, will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak. Sophomore center Alva Hedrich continues to lead the Golden Bears with 13.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.

Alexis Sexton, a sophomore guard, scored a career-high 25 points in last week's loss at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. She is averaging 12.1 points and 2.3 assists.

Midway (7-12, 3-6) comes into Beckley on a three-game skid. Sophomore forward Sereniti Webb leads the Eagles at 14.4 ppg and 7.9 rpg.

The Tech men (13-4, 6-2) saw their eight-game win streak snapped with an 87-60 drubbing at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Senior Andrew Work played only 16 minutes before leaving with an injury, and in those 16 minutes scored 12 points.

The Golden Bears bounced back with an 85-77 win at Indiana-Kokomo on Saturday. With Work sitting out, only seven players saw the court. Work will likely also miss Tuesday's game.

Five of the seven scored in double figures, led by Thomas Hailey's 24 points (to go with seven rebounds). Liam Craven added 14 points, Braden Chapman 13 and Brant Smithers and Cam Danser 10 apiece.

Chapman continues to have a solid freshman season for Tech, averaging 16.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists. Work is at 16.9 points and 4.3 rebounds, Hailey 13.5, 4.6 and 2.2 assists and Smithers 12.4 ppg. He is a 40.4 percent (59 of 146) 3-point shooter.

Midway (5-10, 3-6) defeated Indiana Southeast on Saturday to end a seven-game losing streak.

Junior forward Jalen Cincore is averaging 18.2 points and 7.4 rebounds for the Eagles.

Both teams will remain at home Saturday to host Indiana-Southeast. The women will play at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m.
