Wrestling: Willmar Cardinals open state against St. Michael-Albertville

Feb. 20—ST. PAUL — The Willmar wrestling team takes on one of the state's premier programs in the opening round of the Class AAA state tournament.

Seeds for the state team tournaments were announced on Tuesday morning. The Cardinals are unseeded and face second-seeded St. Michael-Albertville in the opening round.

The team championships take place on Thursday, Feb. 29 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Willmar made state after beating Bemidji 31-18 in the Section 8AAA championship. St. Michael-Albertville beat Wayzata 46-15 in the Section 5AAA championship.

The Cardinals and Knights wrestled each other in the regular season, with St. Michael-Albertville beating Willmar 56-8 on Feb. 3 at the Battle for the Bolt Duals in Annandale.

Other Class AAA matchups include: unseeded Apple Valley vs. No. 3 Shakopee; unseeded Forest Lake vs. No. 1 Mounds View; and No. 5 Albert Lea vs. No. 4 Hastings. First-round matches are at 9 a.m.

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and the Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo United also found out their state fate on Tuesday.

BBE is the three seed in Class A and faces unseeded United North Central in the quarterfinals. United North Central is a co-op of Menahga and Sebeka.

The Jaguars beat Canby 39-21 in the Section 5A championship. United North Central beat Frazee 27-23 in the Section 8A championship.

Other Class A matchups include: unseeded LeSueur-Henderson vs. No. 2 Staples-Motley; unseeded Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie vs. No. 1 Chatfield; and No. 5 Jackson County Central vs. No. 4 Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial.

United is unseeded in Class AA. It kicks off state against No. 2 Kasson-Mantorville.

United is the Section 3AA champ following a 28-27 win against Marshall. Kasson-Mantorville is the 1AA champ after beating Zumbrota-Mazeppa 27-20.

Other Class AA matchups are: unseeded Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton vs. No. 3 Totino-Grace; unseeded Little Falls vs. No. 1 Simley; and No. 5 Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran vs. No. 4 Becker.
