Wrestling roundup: Willmar Cardinals go 1-1 at Perham triangular

Feb. 6—PERHAM — The Willmar wrestling team split its matches at the Perham Triangular, beating the host Yellowjackets 39-21 and falling to Moorhead 39-28.

Moorhead is a Section 8AAA team, complicating what is turning out to be a very close section in which Willmar covets the top seed.

"It (the loss to Moorhead) was our first section loss of the season," Willmar head coach Ed Oehlers said. "We still have the best record in the section, so we'll see what happens next (with seeding).

"We were missing a couple guys again. It's been the story of our season."

Against Perham, Willmar earned wins from Logan Fagerlie at 114 pounds, Wyatt Cruze at 212, Ivan Mares at 127, Isaac Cayler at 133, Cavin Carlson at 139, Sully Anez at 145, Conlan Carlson at 152, Isaac Velaya-Velasquez at 160 and Filey Donelan at 285.

In the Moorhead match, the Cardinals fell behind 22-0 before Mares scored a 10-1 major decision over Owen Borud at 133.

Willmar tied it up at 22-22 after pins by Cavin Carlson at 139, Conland Carlson at 145 and Anez at 152.

The Spuds then built the lead up to 33-23 before Ramero Trevino earned a pin at 215 to close it to 33-28 before Moorhead's Jake Erdmann closed it out with a pin at 285.

The Section 8AAA team quarterfinals begin Wednesday, Feb. 14.

New London-Spicer went 3-0 at the Quad County quadrangular, including a win over the host Cobras in Granite Falls.

Jeremiah Nelson (127 pounds), Isaiah Nelson (133), Holton Hanson (139), Adam Sandau (160), Brody Duke (172) and Marshel Johnson (285) all won by fall for the Wilddcats. Everett Halvorson added a tech fall at 152.

Jacob Savig (189) and Jasen Jansen (215) each earned falls for Quad County. Quad County is a co-op of MACCRAY, Renville County West and Yellow Medicine East.

New London-Spicer scored 34 straight points to open its dual against Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City on the way to a victory at Granite Falls.

Winning by fall for the Wildcats were Elden Halvorson (114 pounds), Carson Nelson (121), Jeremiah Nelson (127), Holton Hanson (139), Caleb Nelson (145) and Carson McCain (189).

Isaiah Renne picked up a fall for the Falcons at 215.

Elden Halvorson (114 pounds), Carson Newman (121), Adam Sandau (160) and Brody Duke (172) each picked up six points by fall for New London-Spicer over Fulda/Murray County Central at Granite Falls.

Isaiah Nelson (133) and Caleb Nelson (145) added tech falls for the Wildcats.

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, ranked second in Class A, went 3-0 in its home quadrangular at Belgrade.

Against BOLD, the Jaguars' Noah DeRoo (114 pounds), Jace Mueller (121), Dylan Koob (127), Louie Tensen (133), Ethan Mueller (160), Hunter Laage (189) and Harley Weber (285) all won by fall.

Edger Kopel won by decision for the Warriors at 107.

After trailing 18-0 to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa won the remaining nine matches to secure a dual win in Belgrade.

Ryan Jensen (139), Tanner Viessman (145), Brett DeRoo (152) and Ethan Mueller (160) put together consecutive falls. Carson Gilbert (215) and Harley Weber (285) were also winners by fall for the Jaguars.

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa scored bonus points in 12 of 13 matches in a shutout over Crosby-Ironton in Belgrade.

Noah Welte (114 pounds), Jace Mueller (127), Louie Tensen (133), Ethan Mueller (160) and Hunter Laage (189) were all winners by fall for the Jaguars. Jace, Tensen, Ethan and Laage's falls all came in the first period.

Brady Kiecker won a 7-0 decision at 145 pounds for BOLD's lone win in a dual loss to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville in Belgrade.

Ava Kiecker (114 pounds) won by fall for BOLD in the Warriors' loss to Crosby-Ironton at Belgrade.

Gabe Berstrom added bonus points with a major decision at 160.
