Louisiana Tech has a much needed bye week, so I will take the opportunity to talk about one of my favorite subjects: Conference Realignment.
Face it, the wheel never stops spinning - so why not throw out wild conjecture?
Conference USA is too spread out, everyone knows that. Everyone also has an opinion on how the Sun Belt and Conference USA could combine, realign, or completely redesign how everything looks. My opinion is Conference USA is too big and too spread out. I would like to see conferences go back to being tighter knit groups that allows for easier travel and better fan participation.
Eastern Athletic Conference
Yes, the EAC and not the EEEEEK run away! There have been some quality schools making the jump up to the FBS level and there are a few more that are more than capable. In fact, there are enough schools to form a nice little league.
Southern States Conference (or the I-20 League)
A little tighter fit with only 8 schools. We are shipping UTEP out to the MWC to be the 12th full member.
How about a fictional, potential 9th member? Combine Pensacola State College with the University of West Florida, build a new football stadium, and become another Sunshine State power house - The University of Pensacola. They have the U down in Coral Gables, so on the opposite end of the state - we can have The UP.
It's not the old Southwest Conference or the Southwestern Athletic Conference, it's something new - kind of.
New Mexico State
Lamar was a member of the Sun Belt in the 1990's so there is a little history there. Also, who wouldn't want to see the Battle of the Ol' School Bell brought back with Troy vs. Jacksonville State?
