Woods women fall to Point Park

Feb. 28—Led by a game-high 19 points from junior Brooklynn Jones, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College held a two-point lead at halftime before Point Park used a big third-quarter surge en route to a 97-81 victory over the Pomeroys in the River States Conference tournament quarterfinals at Hamilton Arena.

SMWC wrapped up an 18-11 season in the quarterfinals of the RSC tournament — a league in which it finished with a record of 13-5 and the No. 3 seed as this week's event. Wednesday's game marked the first-ever women's tournament home contest in program history.

It also marked the most wins in a season for the program since the 2012-13 campaign.

For the Pomeroys, Brooklynn Jones led the way with 19 points on the strength of a 7-of-13 shooting performance. Allyson Hardiek collected 11 caroms to pace the Pomeroys. SMWC hit 37.1 percent of its shots, but Point Park countered with a 52.2-percent mark and connected on 12 shots from long range.

Joining Jones in double-figure scoring for The Woods were Irye Gomez with 15 points and Madison Fueger and Destiny Thomas with 13 each.

Point Park was led offensively by Gillian Piccolino with 25 points and Aichata Ballo with 24.
