Why Daniel Gafford loves classic video games originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

NBC Sports Washington caught up with Sixers guard Isaiah Joe last week, and the former college teammate of Daniel Gafford shared some stories about the new Wizards big man, who has made quite the impression so far in just eight games with the team.

Joe spoke about how Gafford had an impressive collection of classic video games like 'Mario Kart,' 'Super Smash Bros' and 'Street Fighter.' Gafford elaborated when he spoke to NBC Sports Washington this week after practice.

Gafford said he loves playing 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,' old versions of 'Call of Duty' and the original 'Mortal Kombat' games, among the others, and there's a specific reason why.

"I have a lot of memories based on the games that I played like back in elementary school and certain things like that. I always want to hone in on some of those memories," Gafford said.

"It’s just something that brings the inner child out of me. It lets me just wake up every morning and have something that I can actually do to relax and separate myself from the world and just be able to play something that I played when I was a kid. It gave me energy and it made me happy through the situations I was in when I was younger."

Many can probably relate to Gafford there, as video games were a big part of childhood for a lot of people. Some of those games certainly stand the test of time. As good as the graphics and gameplay is with the new games today, sometimes you have to go back to the classics.

Maybe this can help fans come up with a nickname for Gafford, as he doesn't currently have one listed on Basketball Reference. How about 'The Finisher,' in a nod to 'Mortal Kombat' and his ability to throw down lobs?
