Wisconsin set to hire Air Force assistant to coach defensive line

MADISON – Luke Fickell’s choice to coach Wisconsin’s defensive line has strong ties to one of Fickell’s current assistants.

A UW source confirmed Thursday an ESPN report that Fickell plans to bring in E.J. Whitlow to oversee the defensive line.

Whitlow replaces Greg Scruggs, who left UW after one season to coach Michigan's defensive line.

Whitlow has been the defensive ends coach at Air Force for the last two seasons. He also coached the defensive line at Grand Valley State from 2014-17.

Grand Valley State’s head coach was Matt Mitchell, who is entering his second season as UW’s outside linebackers/special teams coach.

After four seasons under Mitchell, Whitlow was named defensive line coach at Miami (Ohio). He coached there through the 2021 season before joining the Air Force staff.
