Just a few short days ago, L’Oréal Paris announced that Winona Ryder, 46, had been chosen as one of the faces of its new “Comeback” campaign, celebrating the fact that hair can make a comeback from damage. While people were excited to hear about the collaboration, one of the ads — starring Ryder and promoting the launch of the Elvive line for damaged hair — aired during the 2018 Golden Globes, and it left lots of people feeling confused.
At the beginning of the clip, the Stranger Things star is seen in a dressing room touching her hair and getting ready to perform. Toward the end, Ryder 46-year-old steps out onto a stage, and the words “Everyone loves a comeback” appear, followed by, “Damaged hair deserves one, too.”
The one-minute message left lots of people questioning what an actress’s comeback might have to do with restoring damaged hair. Twitter erupted with perplexed reactions moments after the commercial aired. One person questioned, “Did this L’Oréal commercial just compare Winona Ryder’s career to damaged hair?” Another tweeted, “This Winona Ryder hair commercial is WILD. ‘Everyone loves a comeback. Damaged hair deserves one too.’ Like… the woman was in MERMAIDS, L’oreal!

That Elvive commercial really took me on an journey. First, riveted by the reveal of the woman. Then, excitement that Winona Ryder is being recognized. Then cringing so hard I injured myself at the tagline:

Along with Ryder, the new L’Oréal Paris “Comeback” campaign also stars actress Aja Naomi King and singer-songwriter Camila Cabello, “all of whom have their own unique hair comeback stories,” the brand announced in an official statement. While many people took issue with the comparison, some fans were excited to see Ryder’s amazing flowing tresses.
