Winner Area, Sturgis take top seeds into SD dual wrestling state tourney

Feb. 5—PIERRE — Winner Area will take the No. 1 seed into the Class B state high school wrestling dual tournament field this weekend after the eight-team field was announced on Monday by the South Dakota High School Activities Association.

The Class B state championship will be contested at the Watertown Civic Arena on Saturday, Feb. 10, with the Warriors standing as one of four undefeated teams heading into the eight-team competition. Winner Area, which won the 2022 Class B duals title, will face Custer in the opening round, with the victor in that matchup taking on either No. 4 Philip/Kadoka Area/Wall (9-1) or No. 5 Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes (12-1).

The eight teams were selected based on regular-season record, while also applying seeding criteria used for the individual tournament, as well, such as head-to-head meetings, records against common opponents and last year's state finish.

The other Class B matchups include No. 3 Bon Homme/Avon facing No. 6 Clark/Willow Lake in a battle of undefeated dual squads, with BHA at 11-0 and the Cyclones entering at 12-0. No. 2 Canton, which has won three of the four most recent Class B dual state titles, will put its 15-0 dual title on the line against No. 7 Miller/Highmore-Harrold. Canton defeated Bon Homme/Avon in the 2023 Class B dual championship 46-18 in Rapid City, capping a 30-0 dual season.

In Class A, where the state tournament will be held at the Dacotah Bank Center in Brookings, Sturgis is the No. 1 overall seed, taking on Tea Area in the opening round. Pierre, which has won the 2021 and 2023 Class A dual titles, is seeded second and will take on West Central in the quarterfinals. No. 3 Rapid City Stevens faces No. 6 Watertown in the opening round, while last season's runner-up, No. 5 Brandon Valley, takes on No. 4 Aberdeen Central.

All quarterfinal duals will take place at 11 a.m., with the semifinal round to follow. The championships are tentatively slated for 2 p.m. This is the first season since the state dual format returned in 2020 that the dual competition is on its own weekend. The South Dakota state individual tournament remains on its usual weekend this year, taking place on Feb. 22-24 in Sioux Falls.
