July 17: Solskjaer omits Lukaku, punishes Lingard

With nearly seven months under his belt as Manchester United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is making it clear: You’re either with his Red Devils or not.

Solskjaer left striker Romelu Lukaku out of the squad entirely for Wednesday’s win over Leeds as part of United’s preseason tour in Australia. The move, Sky Sports understands, is the beginning of an exit process for the Belgian, who’s being pursued by Inter Milan with an offer expected this week.

David de Gea was also not in the team Wednesday, but Sky Sports reports it was due to illness.

That’s not all. Solskjaer also told the media United punished Jesse Lingard internally for uploading a lewd video to Snapchat last month while on vacation in Miami.

“I can’t spoon-feed these players, they have got to do it themselves,” Solskjaer said. “... They have to make their own decisions, and in life as well.”

Lingard has yet to realize his potential as a winger, and at 26 years old, has had his name bandied about in transfer speculation.

Paul Pogba, meanwhile started for United against Leeds, and Solskjaer insists he’s not going to sell the star midfielder and intends to build the team around him.
