Wimbledon 2022 Day 5: Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz dominate, Maria Sakkari upset

Day 5 of Wimbledon 2022 featured a couple of Americans as well as some of the favorites still left in the field. Francis Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, John Isner, Steve Johnson, Jack Sock and Maxime Cressy all played on the men's side, while Alison Riske-Amritraj was the lone woman from the U.S. playing on Friday. Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Cameron Norrie, Maria Sakkari, Ons Jabeur and Angelique Kerber were also on the docket.

Carlos Alcaraz dominates to advance to fourth round

Carlos Alcaraz made things look easy during his third-round match against Oscar Otte. Alcaraz won in straight sets, defeating Otte 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Alcaraz, who lost in the second round at Wimbledon in 2021, said after the win that he's getting more comfortable playing on grass.

He played like it Friday.

The 19-year-old Alcaraz will face off against Jannik Sinner in the fourth round. The two will play Sunday.

Novak Djokovic wins 35th match on Centre Court

Novak Djokovic notched another win at Wimbledon with a victory over fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanović in straight sets 6-0, 6-3, 6-4. The No. 1-seeded Djokovic made quick work of No. 25-seeded Kecmanović in the first set before facing a slightly stiffer challenge in the final two sets. Djokovic's quest for a fourth consecutive Wimbledon title continues.

Maria Sakkari falls to Tatjana Maria

Tatjana Maria of Germany defeated fifth-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. Maria, 34, is the oldest player left In the tournament. She recently returned from maternity leave after the birth of her second child this past year.

Frances Tiafoe rallies to beat Alexander Bublik

It took two tiebreaker sets in the middle of the match for 23rd-seeded Frances Tiafoe of the United States to defeat towering Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in four sets, 3-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(3), 6-4. Despite a barrage of aces from Bublik, Tiafoe took advantage of a lot of errors by the Kazakh to win crucial points. This will be Tiafoe's first foray into the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Tim van Rijthoven upsets Nikoloz Basilashvili

In the first upset of the day, Tim van Rijthoven of the Netherlands rolled to a surprise victory over 22nd-seeded Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. The Dutchmen became the seventh player since 2000 to reach the fourth round of his first Grand Slam main draw and is on an eight-match winning streak.

Ons Jabeur rolls into fourth round

Third-seeded Ons Jabeur's set streak continued Friday when she beat Diane Perry of France 6-2, 6-3. The Tunisian controlled the match from start to finish, winning 14 consecutive points to win and cruise into the fourth round.

Other notable results

• American Tommy Paul breezed past Czechia's Jiří Veselý in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to. the fourth round. The 30th-seeded Paul will play on Sunday.

• Marie Bouzková of Czechia upset 28th-seeded Alison Riske-Amritrah of the United States in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

• Jeļena Ostapenko, the 12th seed from Latvia, rallied from a loss in the first set to beat Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

• Elise Mertens, the 24th seed, took down Angelique Kerber, the 15th seed, in straight sets 6-4, 6-5.

• 30-year-old Heather Watson advanced to the fourth round for the first time in her 13-year ATP career. She beat Kaja Juvan in straight sets 7-6(6), 6-2 and will face Jule Niemeier.

• Jack Sock took down Maxime Cressy in a rare meeting of Americans to advance to the third round, winning 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(1). Sock will face Jason Kubler of Australia tomorrow.

• Zhang Shuai was upset by Carolina Garcia in the third round of the event. Shuai, ranked No. 33, fell in straight sets 7-6, 7-6. Garcia registered 18 aces in the win.

• Americans John Isner and Steve Johnson failed to make it past the third round. Isner fell to Sinner in straight sets. Johnson also fell in straight sets, losing to No. 9 seed Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-1, 6-0.
