The movie, titled “King Richard,” currently has a spec script circulating. Smith is “poised to play” the titular role.

The movie would reportedly focus on Richard Williams’ plan for his daughters. When Venus and Serena were around four years old, Richard Williams reportedly drew up a 78-page plan mapping out his daughters’ paths to playing professional tennis.

The script ranked second on The Black List in 2018. The list looks at the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. It’s based on opinions from hundreds of film executives.

Given that and the fact that Smith wants to play the part, the script could get picked up soon. CAA is reportedly selling it, according to Deadline.

There’s already a lot of material on Richard Williams available online, so Smith shouldn’t have any trouble getting into character should the movie get made.
