'It was a wild one': Bears tight end Jimmy Graham recounts single-car rollover accident

Chicago Bears tight end Jimmy Graham detailed a scary single-car accident he was involved in in early March and said he was "lucky" to escape without injury.

Graham said the accident took place in Miami and that his car rolled over several times.

"I was on the turnpike and I saw a cop going kind of down this off-ramp with his lights off. He was reversing, so I got over two lanes and the sun is kind of coming up," Graham said Tuesday, according to ESPN. "So as I'm going over (a) hill, I look up and there is a disabled vehicle in the center lane, and I'm going about 90 miles per hour. Probably about 15 yards away (from the disabled car), I swerved to the left and barely missed him, but I was headed for a bridge, so I kind of had to make a last-minute decision. So I decided to turn right and flip it to avoid jumping that (bridge).

"I ended up rolling — the cop said four times — and skidded on the roof for about 100 yards. It was a wild one."

Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Shaq Thompson (54) hits Chicago Bears tight end Jimmy Graham (80) during the first half of an NFL football game in Charlotte, N.C., Sunday, Oct. 18, 2020.

Graham made the comments during a news conference as the Bears were about to kick off their three-day mandatory minicamp and said that he was on the way to the airport that day with his dog, Ginger.

Graham said neither he nor his dog sustained any injuries.

"I was talking to the cop, right after the accident, and talking to my mechanic, and it really felt like a game," Graham said, comparing the accident to football. "Everything was really slow. I can remember making every decision. I can actually remember my phone floating up in the air — I could see the time. I just knew it wasn't my time. I was like, there is no way I'm going die over something this stupid.

"But obviously I was extremely lucky."

Graham thanked the officers and first responders who assisted on the scene after the accident and said he wasn't found at fault.

Graham, 34, is a five-time Pro Bowl selection and one-time All-Pro. He's set to enter his 12th season in the NFL and his second with the Bears. He caught 50 passes for 456 yards and eight touchdowns last year.
