Why Michael Jordan's mom got mad after his first 'Last Dance' interview

Obviously, Michael Jordan is the focal point of "The Last Dance." Jordan was the star of the world in the 1990s, and his voice carries much of the documentary series.

So, what's it like to interview Jordan? Director Jason Hehir talked about that on "The Jalen & Jacoby Aftershow" on Sunday night. Three interviews with Jordan were shown in the first six episodes of the documentary series.

In the first interview with Hehir, Jordan is wearing a blue shirt, and has a drink and a cigar sitting to his right. If you pay attention, you will notice the time of day shifting and the amount of liquid in his drink going up and down throughout the episodes.

In the next two interviews (the ones where Jordan is wearing a purple shirt and a black shirt), the drink and cigar are gone. You can thank his mom for that one.

"He couldn't have a cigar on set because his mom got mad at him," Hehir said. "He said, 'I can't have the cigars today because my mom got mad at me because she saw me smoking a cigar.'"

Even the GOAT has to deal with his mom getting mad at him for how he presents himself.

Hehir gave more detail about what it was like interviewing Jordan. He said 11 months passed between the first and second interviews, and had a good story about how Jordan greeted him when they met back up.

"I had sent him the topics that we were going to be discussing, and the first thing he said to me when he came in was ‘I know you sent the topics. I didn't look at them. You can ask me whatever you want. I'm going to give you an honest answer,'" Hehir said. "Which is way better than him saying 'I looked them over and let's go over this. Don't ask me about this. Don't ask me about this.' You saw the clip in ‘92 and the Dream Team when he says ‘Alright, no Isiah Thomas questions.' And now it's come full circle because here's a guy saying 'I don't even know what you're going to ask me, but go ahead. I'm going to give you an honest answer.' So I truly think he was an open book and we could have asked him anything we wanted at that point."

Part of what makes "The Last Dance" so riveting is the unguarded comments from so many of the people involved, including Jordan.

In case you were wondering, the chronological order of Jordan's interviews is blue shirt (the one where he tells the Dennis Rodman going to Vegas story), purple shirt (the one where he is shown a clip from Isiah Thomas about walking out during the 1991 Eastern Conference finals) and, finally, black shirt (which Hehir said was a shorter interview to fill in the remaining gaps).
