Here’s why Josh McDaniels isn’t being bombarded with interview requests

Josh McDaniels’ name has been surprisingly quiet when it comes to open head-coaching positions.

The New England Patriots offensive coordinator has been one of the top candidates for open positions in recent years. This season specifically, he cultivated the best rookie quarterback in Mac Jones and helped guide the Patriots to a playoff appearance.

McDaniels took a brand new group of offensive weapons and put together a winning formula — despite injuries and adversity with this group. So, with eight open head-coaching positions — why isn’t McDaniels’ name more involved?

While on WEEI’s “Gresh & Keefe,” NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport was asked if the lack of interest in McDaniels stemmed from the fact he withdrew from the Indianapolis Colts’ job in 2018.

“I don’t know that it’s that, as much as it has to be perfect,” he said. “First of all, with him, people are not going to request him unless they know he’s going to take the interview and is very interested in the job. He’s not — like Brian Callahan, the offensive coordinator for the Bengals, good young coach, very well respected, will probably take any interview he gets.”

Josh McDaniels is obviously not like that, so I think his lack of requests is probably as much due to anything as much as you’re only going to request him if you’re basically going to hire him. Otherwise, you’re not going to go all the way down the road. I think for him, the process is different from basically any other candidate.”

For this reason, the Patriots may be a little more concerned if or when McDaniels does accept an interview request.
