Barcelona wrapped up its fourth title in five years with a 1-0 win over Levante at the weekend, in which their talisman Leo Messi came off the bench to score the winner. The Blaugrana have been defeated only once in their last 23 games in all competitions, they haven’t lost in the league since November.
It’s been a truly incredible season for the Catalans, who are in the final four of the Champions League and are the only remaining team not to have lost a game in this season’s competition. And they will contest the Copa Del Rey final against Valencia next month… which means they’re in line for their third treble in a decade.
Only seven clubs have ever completed a treble (that’s the league, the Champions League and the main domestic cup) and Barca are the only club to do it twice. To do it three times in such a short period of time, would be absolutely sensational.
Since the last time they won the treble, in 2015, they have changed managers and lost key players like Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Neymar. Not only have they been able to suitably replace those players, but they have stayed at the very top of the game.
So if Barca is in such incredible form, why aren’t they getting more hype?
Well, firstly, it could be that soccer storylines elsewhere have taken our attention. We have the best Premier League title race in years unfolding, it’s pretty dramatic in the Bundesliga and in the Champions League, Ajax are stealing the headlines with their incredible run.
So we’ve been distracted from Barca’s brilliance. But their dominance is also flying low under the radar because it’s what we’ve come to expect from them. We expect Lionel Messi to score sensational goals every week, we expect Barca to have an unassailable lead at the top, and we expect them to play incredible soccer every time they hit the field.
It’s not that they’ve made winning boring - it’s that they’ve raised our expectations through the roof. And frankly, you wouldn’t bet against them securing that incredible third treble.
