Why Detroit Tigers' Matt Manning exited early from third rehab start for Triple-A Toledo

Detroit Tigers right-hander Matt Manning, recovering from right shoulder inflammation, exited his third rehab start Thursday for Triple-A Toledo in the third inning after throwing 49 pitches.

The 24-year-old did not suffer an injury.

“Nothing arm or shoulder related," Tigers general manager Al Avila told the Free Press in a text message. "He felt light-headed and was not feeling well.”

Manning tossed two scoreless innings, but allowed two hits, three walks and hit one batter. He threw just 22 of 49 pitches for strikes, recording two strikeouts. He pitched the first game of a doubleheader at Triple-A Indianapolis, an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Tigers wanted Manning to complete five innings and throw at least 70 pitches in what was supposed to be his final rehab start. He was lined up to return to the starting rotation, decimated with injuries, for Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

After Manning's short start for Toledo, his availability for the Twins series is to be determined.

The Tigers also need a starter for Monday's game against the Twins. Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez left Wednesday's series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays with one out in the first inning due to left side discomfort.

Rodriguez will be placed on the injured list.

Once that happens, the Tigers will have five starters on the injured list: Manning, Rodriguez, right-hander Casey Mize (right elbow sprain), righty Michael Pineda (right middle finger fracture) and left-hander Tyler Alexander (left elbow sprain).

The Tigers sent Manning to the injured list April 20.
