Even though it’s key to try to secure a five-category hitter as early as you can in your fantasy baseball drafts, grabbing that dominant ace is just as important.
And right now, it would be hard to argue against this big three: Gerrit Cole, Jacob deGrom, and Max Scherzer (Justin Verlander would absolutely make that list if he were fully healthy, which he might be depending on when the season opens).
Dalton goes with Max Scherzer, who, even with injuries last season, had the highest velocity of his career, and even though he’s the oldest of the trio, Scherzer has shown Justin-Verlander-levels of ability into his late 30s.
Scott goes with Jacob deGrom, whom he says has the least amount of mileage among the top names. He’ll also play with a better bullpen, and presents quite possibly the safest option among those top pitchers.
Finally, Andy sides with Gerrit Cole, who was “unreal” last year. He struck out 602 batters in the last two years alone. Sure, the move to Yankee Stadium isn’t amazing, but Cole has the stuff to be successful anywhere.
