TA waves home a Sox run while caught in rundown originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Tony La Russa frequently calls Tim Anderson one of the leaders of the Chicago White Sox.

And it's because of plays like this.

The White Sox fought back in the second inning of the first game of Monday's doubleheader after the Cleveland Indians jumped on Carlos Rodón for a pair of home runs in the first inning. Zack Collins delivered the biggest blow in the rally, changing a 2-0 deficit to a 3-2 lead with a bases-clearing double.

But a few batters later, Anderson got the White Sox a fourth run while making an inning-ending out.

The shortstop was picked off first base, but he immediately recognized that the White Sox could steal another run before the end of the inning and started waving Collins home from third base while in the rundown. He traversed the base path long enough for Collins to make it home before being tagged out.

Among his many other important qualities, it's his ability to recognize those kinds of situations and benefit the team while doing so that makes Anderson such a valuable piece of the puzzle for a group trying to win the World Series. That goal looks attainable as the White Sox came into a four-game set in Cleveland with one of baseball's best win-loss marks.

The White Sox always talk about doing the little things. And it's little things like Anderson's run-scoring play Monday that make the difference between a contender and a pretender.
