White Sox reinstate OF Jay from 60-day IL

The Chicago White Sox reinstated outfielder Jon Jay from the 60-day injured list on Monday.

In a corresponding move, the team designated right-handed pitcher Odrisamer Despaigne for assignment.

Jay, 34, was placed on the injured list on March 25 with a strained right hip and has yet to make his regular-season debut. The White Sox signed the veteran to a one-year contract on Jan. 10.

He played in 16 rehab games between Triple-A Charlotte and Double-A Birmingham, batting .333 (21 of 63) with a pair of doubles, seven RBIs and eight runs.

Jay is a career .285 hitter best known for his defense. He is the all-time leader in fielding percentage among outfielders at .9961.

He played six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (2010-15) but has been well-traveled since: San Diego Padres (2016), Chicago Cubs (2017), and the Kansas City Royals and Arizona Diamondbacks in 2018.

Despaigne, 32, was 0-2 with a 9.45 ERA (14 earned runs in 13 1/3 innings) in three starts with the White Sox since they brought him up from Charlotte on June 10. He signed as a free agent on May 19.
