White, Garvis earn all-LHC basketball honors

Feb. 28—The Newton girls basketball team took positive steps forward this past season. The Cardinals' seven wins were tied for the most in the past seven seasons.

The next step for Newton is to improve inside Little Hawkeye Conference play. The Cardinals won one game in the league for the third straight year and two players were recognized for their efforts.

Junior Alex Garvis and sophomore Tori White both earned honorable mention recognition as the all-conference teams were released Tuesday after Dallas Center-Grimes was ousted in the first round of the girls basketball state tournament.

Ten Cardinals also were named to the all-LHC academic team. That group includes Garvis, White, seniors Estella Allen and Haylie Ryan, juniors Hailey Dickerson, Evie Main, Alex Riney and Bella Winther and sophomores Gabbie Humphrey and Merissa Schiebel.

All-conference recognition is based on statistics inside conference play only.

White ranked second on the team in scoring at 5.1 points per game. She led the Cardinals and ranked third in the conference in rebounding at 8.8 per contest and led the team and tied for seventh in the LHC in steals per game at 2.0.

White also ranked second on the team in assists at 1.7 per contest and shot a team-best 41.3 percent from the floor while starting 11 of the 12 conference games.

Garvis led the Cardinals in assists at 1.8 per game. Her 1.3 steals per contest ranked second and she was third in rebounding at 4.0 per tilt. She also tied for third on the team in scoring at 5.0 per game.

Garvis ranked third on the team in free-throw shooting at 66.7 percent while starting 11 of the 12 conference games.

Newton finished the season 7-15, which matched the 2019-20 record. The Cardinals won eight games in 2016-17 and finished 13-10 in 2015-16.

The last time the program won more than one conference game was the 2020-21 season. The Cardinals were 4-10 in league play in the 2019-20 season.
