Whit Merrifield calls out SCHEELS for abundance of Patrick Mahomes Royals jerseys

There’s some playful drama brewing in Kansas City.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes became part of the Kansas City Royals ownership group back in July. Shortly after, the team saw an opportunity to capitalize on jersey sales. Mahomes, after all, was the NFL’s leader in merchandise sales for the 2019 season. The Royals opted to release and sell a Mahomes jersey with his No. 15. By October, with the Chiefs’ season in full-swing, Mahomes had become the No. 1 selling MLB jersey on fanatics.com.

A fan recently pointed out that the Royals section in the local SCHEELS sporting goods store had an overabundance of Mahomes jerseys. Royals star outfielder and second baseman Whit Merrifield, who also wears the No. 15, called out the sporting goods chain on Twitter.

Mahomes madness is a real thing in Kansas City, but there are literally dozens of Royals jerseys pictured here and none of them are of a player that actually plays on the team. Mahomes did throw a mean fastball back in the day when he also played baseball.

I know it’s the holiday shopping season and Mahomes products are in demand, but this seems just moderately disrespectful. As any good part-owner would, Mahomes is on the case to get things sorted out.

SCHEELS eventually responded with a picture of a Christmas tree, presumably in their store, with both Merrifield and Mahomes jerseys hanging from the tree.

Maybe part of the solution is for the Chiefs to start selling a No. 15 Merrifield jersey in the Pro Shop? That seems like something that Mahomes could help with. Either way, Kansas City sure does love their No. 15’s and they’re lucky to have them both.
