What we know about the Bahamas National Team:
▪ It currently has a 2-4 record in 2022 World Cup qualifying. The Bahamas has twice beaten the U.S. Virgin Islands, 86-74 on Feb. 26, and 97-80 on July 2. However, the Bahamians have twice been pulverized by Team Canada, falling 115-73 last Nov. 28, then getting whacked 113-77 on the following day. The Bahamas has also gone 0-2 vs. the Dominican Republic, losing 90-65 on Feb. 27 but only falling by eight, 88-80, on July 5.
▪ Indiana Pacers guard Buddy Hield, the former Oklahoma Sooners star, has played in two World Cup qualifying games this summer for the Bahamas. In the 97-80 victory over the U.S. Virgin Islands on July 2, Hield made five of 11 three-pointers and had 24 points while also doling out five assists.
The 6-foot-4 Hield also played for the Bahamas in its 88-80 loss to the Dominican Republic on July 5. He turned in a dazzling showing, scoring 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting, including 6-of-11 from deep. Hield also had five rebounds, nine assists and three steals.
▪ The only two players who have appeared in all six World Cup qualifying games so far for the Bahamas are Mychel Thompson (11.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg) and Travis Munnings (10 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 5.3 apg).
▪ After its exhibition vs. Kentucky, The Bahamas still has five World Cup-qualifying games remaining to be played: two vs. Venezuela (Aug. 25, Feb. 24, 2023); two vs. Argentina (Aug. 29, Nov. 13); and one against Panama (Nov. 10).
