Ryan Lochte last represented the United States in the Olympics at Rio Janeiro in 2016.

Competing in his fourth Olympics, he won gold in the 4x200-meter freestyle and came in fifth in the 200m freestyle.

But it was what happened out of the pool that captured attention.

Lochte was embroiled in controversy when he alleged that he and three other American swimmers had been pulled over and robbed by armed men with police badges while in Rio de Janeiro. Lochte later admitted he exaggerated his initial description and was suspended for 10 months.

What is Lochte doing now?

Lochte has not had much success after Rio because of suspensions.

He was suspended for another 14 months in 2018 by the United States Anti-Doping Agency for taking a "prohibited intravenous infusion." On May 24 that year, Lochte posted a picture of himself receiving an infusion despite USADA rules prohibiting intravenous infusions in a volume greater than 100 mL within a 12-hour period unless they're received during hospital treatment.

Lochte served his suspension and competed in the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials at age 36. He finished seventh in the 200-meter individual medley and did not qualify for a fifth time.

After the trials, Lochte said he was still committed to competitive swimming and has no desire to retire.

How many Olympic medals has Lochte won?

With 12 Olympic medals, Lochte ranks second among U.S. men's swimmers behind Michael Phelps (28).

He has won six gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

What are Lochte's world records and other accolades?

Lochte holds two world records for the 200m individual medley in both the short and long course. He used to hold the short course world records in the 100m IM, 100m backstroke and 400m IM.

Lochte has won 62 medals in the world championship from 2004-15. The includes 36 gold medals.

While competing at the University of Florida from 2003-06, Lochte was a 24-time All-American and was named NCAA male swimmer of the year twice.
