Where are the cheapest gas prices on Cape Cod? Here's an updated list

HYANNIS — In the 3 1/2 miles from the interchange at routes 6 and 132 to the rotary at the Hyannis Airport, the prices for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline ranged from $4.13/gallon to $4.29/gallon on Wednesday. Premium unleaded ranged from $4.52/gallon to $4.89/gallon.

That 16-cent difference in regular and 37-cent difference in premium, is enough to make drivers plan their routes — and sometimes their shopping habits — accordingly.

A BJ’s membership, for instance, gives drivers access to the lowest area prices at the pump, according to GasBuddy. The BJ’s station at 590 Iyannough Road in Barnstable was charging $4.13/gallon for regular and $4.52/gallon for premium unleaded on Wednesday.

Stop & Shop and Shaw’s grocery customers can also earn points that translate into money off gas purchases. On Wednesday, Stop & Shop at 125 W. Main Street, Hyannis was offering gasoline for $4.23/gallon for regular and $4.63/gallon for premium unleaded. A hefty shopping bill might give a customer 20, 30, or 40 cents and more off that cost.

The Mobil station on Camp Street in Hyannis was selling at the highest price. On Wednesday prices were $4.39/gallon for regular and $4.95/gallon for premium unleaded according to GasBuddy.

The farther out on the Cape one travels, the more expensive the prices. At BP in Eastham, regular unleaded cost $4.43/gallon, premium unleaded $5.03/gallon.

Fuel prices vary because of differences in state and local taxes, supply disruptions, retail competition, operating costs and a host of other factors. Prices in Massachusetts include the 24-cent Massachusetts excise tax, a 2.6-cent underground fuel tank cleanup charge, and 18.3-cent federal tax.

Economists blame the Russian invasion into Ukraine on Feb. 24 for rising crude oil prices. The country is the third-largest producer of oil in the world behind the US and Saudi Arabia.

US and European Union sanctions levied against Russia helped push the price of crude oil over $100/barrel on February 28, according to the US Energy and Information Administration.

Two weeks after the invasion of Ukraine, AAA reported the highest recorded average price for gasoline and diesel in Massachusetts. On March 11, the average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $4.38/gallon. Diesel rang up at $5.23/gallon.

But prices have come down from just a week ago. According to GasBuddy, the lowest price for regular unleaded in the state is currently $3.74/gallon and the highest price is $4.24/gallon.

AAA’s national average on March 22 is $4.24/gallon for regular unleaded. Six New England states, New Jersey and Pennsylvania show prices in the $4.18 to $4.36 range. New York state prices run higher, falling between $4.36 to $5.86.

The lowest gas prices can be found in 10 Midwestern states and Maryland, with costs ranging from $3.76 to $3.92/gallon.

Massachusetts ranks 7 of 50 states in terms of the biggest change in prices from one year ago. On March 21, 2021, the average cost of a gallon of gas was $2.76. Today’s price of $4.26/gallon represents an increase of $1.49 cents per gallon.
