Western Boone's new conference gets name, logo

Feb. 22—The new conference for Western Boone has its name and logo.

The eight schools in the conference announced Thursday that the conference will be known as the Monon Athletic Conference (MAC).

The conference officially will get underway in the 2025-26 school year.

"When we were looking for a name, we were looking for something that would connect the schools," Western Boone Athletic Director Jeremy Dexter said. "We knew we didn't want to use a directional name and the one thing we liked about the Sagamore name was how it stood out.

"The Monon Railroad has been around for more than 100 years from Chicago to Louisville and branched off in Lafayette. The one branch went straight through Montgomery County, Roachdale (where North Putnam is located) and Greencastle, and the other went through Frankfort. Then Western Boone and Cascade were in the middle of the two. We thought it was a good way of showing the connection and was something unique."

The logo for the new conference incorporates the MAC, with railroad tracks and the outline of the state of Indiana in the C.

"We wanted to make sure we incorporated a railroad crossing or symbol, along with the state outline," Dexter said. "We felt like this logo encompassed both of those pretty well."

The new Monon Athletic Conference will feature Western Boone, Cascade, Crawfordsville, Frankfort, Greencastle, North Montgomery, North Putnam and Southmont.

WeBo, the Montgomery County schools and Frankfort have been together in a conference since the 1983-84 season in the Sagamore Conference. They voted in May to separate from the Sagamore and venture out into this new conference.

They added Cascade, Greencastle and North Putnam this fall.
