Week 4 Football: Edgewater vs. Jones headlines Thursday, Friday district schedule

The games mean so much more this week.

District matchups between top teams in the Orlando area highlight Week 4 of the high school football regular season.

Unbeaten Edgewater (3-0), ranked No. 1 in the Sentinel Super 16, hosts No. 4 Jones (1-4) and No. 3 Seminole (2-1) plays at No. 12 Evans (2-1) in notable Thursday night outings for Orange and Seminole county teams.

The Eagles won 14-13 at Jones last September. The Tigers claimed the rematch 42-13 to end Edgewater’s 12-game win streak in a Class 3 Metro regional championship game.

Neither remains fixated on the past.

“We talk about it all the time that each team has a one-year lifespan,” Edgewater coach Cameron Duke said during the preseason. “There’s new guys stepping into leadership roles and new guys stepping into starting positions.”

Sustaining such a culture of success is no easy task.

“It’s difficult when you get young players in and they’re in the weight room working out and thinking they’re entitled,” Jones coach Elijah Williams said. “They expect to be good, but that’s not how it works. We have to stay on them to make sure they understand that all the guys in the past had to work hard and bust their tails for it.”

In other Thursday games, No. 5 Lake Mary (2-0) hosts rival Lake Brantley (1-2), No. 16 Boone (1-2) is home vs. Freedom (1-2) and Dr. Phillips (1-2) is on the road against undefeated Windermere High (3-0).

The Patriots defeated Lake Mary 22-21 last year for only their second win in the series since 2015.

Boone’s Andy Johnson remains one win shy of 100 for his head coaching career, which started at Freedom 18 years ago. The Braves are coming off back-to-back losses since a Week 1 win at Timber Creek.

Windermere High senior Isaiah Nell enters with 600 all-purpose yards, which includes 434 rushing yards and 10 total TDs. Wolverines coach Riki Smith, in his second season, was a long-time DP assistant.

Friday’s schedule includes Lakeland (1-2) at Kissimmee Osceola (0-3), St. Cloud (1-1) at Tohopekaliga (2-0) and No. 15 Leesburg (3-0) at Ocala Vanguard (3-0) in a matchup of unbeatens.

Osceola lost 25-22 vs. Lakeland in the regular season and 14-7 in last year’s Class 4 Suburban state semifinals.

Julian Nasco and Naeem Woulard have combined for 476 receiving yards and 7 TDs for Tohopekaliga. Bryce Williams has intercepted two passes for St. Cloud.

Orlando Christian Prep (3-0) hosts Foundation Academy (2-1) for an early district lead in Class 2M. The Warriors defeated Foundation 57-14 last season in their first meeting in 10 years.

The Week 4 schedule is listed below. Rankings are from Sentinel Super 16. Team win-loss records are in parentheses.
