Wednesday Seacoast Roundup: St. Thomas Aquinas baseball scores 22 runs in season opener

KINGSTON – The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team started its season Wednesday with a 22-4 win over Sanborn in a Division II game.

The Saints scored three runs in the first inning, four in the second, six in the third and nine in the fourth.

Cade Murphy paced the STA offense with five hits, three RBIs and four runs scored, while Thaao Papakonstantis had two hits and four RBIs.

Timmy Avery (three hits, two RBIs, four runs), Ken Avery (three hits, three runs), Michael Skowron (two hits, three RBIs), Sam Grondin (hit, two RBIs), Ryan Gould (hit, three RBIs), Graham Willerer (two hits, two RBIs) and Silas Stanek (two hits, RBI).

Jeffrey Luchsinger earned the win, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out three over two innings.


Portsmouth 11

MANCHESTER - Senior Jake Carlisle allowed three hits and one run over five innings, striking out nine in this Division I, five-inning, season opener for the Clippers.

Portsmouth scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second, one in the fourth, and five in the fifth.

Joe Zingariello had two hits, drove in one and scored four runs for the Clippers, while Porter Lalime had two hits and two RBIs, and Nick Gladu had two hits, an RBI and scored two runs. Teammates Patrick Bancroft (three RBIs), Devin Driscoll (two RBIs) and Carlisle (hit, RBI, two runs) contributed.

Dover 6

Salem 3

SALEM – Senior Alex Cook allowed four hits and one earned run over five innings, striking out nine and earning this Division I win for the Green Wave.

Dover freshman Amari Lewis had one hit and two RBIs, while Grant Davis, Ryan Sullivan, Will Angers, Charlie Kubiet and Jacob Mangum all had one hit. Dover is now 1-1.

Keene 8

Winnacunnet 0

KEENE – The Blackbirds broke open this Division I game with a five-run sixth inning.

Timmy Knight, Alex Santora and Joe Labrecque each had a hit for Winnacunnet (1-1). Keene improved to 2-0.

Oyster River 6

Coe-Brown 2

DURHAM - Cam Sengenberger struck out five and allowed two hits over four innings, leading Oyster River to this season-opening Division II win.

Landon Wolusky threw three scoreless innings of relief, struck out four, and also had two hits and scored a run.


Exeter 19

Nashua South 2

EXETER – Annie Christiana and Summer LeClerc both homered and had three RBIs for Exeter in its Division I season-opening win.

The Blue Hawks scored six runs in the first inning, 10 in the third, and three in the fourth.

Exeter’s Madi Paige added three hits, two RBIs and three runs, and teammates Kristen Bickford (two hits, three runs, RBI), Dejah Rondeau (two hits, RBI), Mckenna Whittier (three hits, three runs, three RBIs), Avery Allard (two hits, two runs), and Rylee Marchand (inside-the-park homer, three RBIs) starred.

Edy Crawford earned the win, striking out six and allowing two unearned runs over four innings.

Spaulding 5

NASHUA – Maddie Hartman allowed four hits and struck out 13 over seven innings as Spaulding earned this Division I season-opening win.

Meg Uraskevich had two double and four RBIs for the Red Raiders. Teammates Bella Sherman (two hits, RBI), Addison French (two hits), Anna Stanley (hit), Izzy Brennan (hit) and Hartman (hit) contributed.

DURHAM – Oyster River’s Addy Veno allowed a leadoff homer, but that was all the runs Coe-Brown would scored in this Division II season opener.

Maeve Hickok had two hits and two RBIs for the Bobcats, while Gracy Spirito, Sam Bishop, Addy Veno, Maddy Veno, and Kaiya Mercier all had one hit.

Portsmouth Christian Academy 11

DOVER – Eliza Arwood’s single scored Lexi Jordan with the game-winning win in this Division IV walk-off victory for the Eagles.

Arwood had four hits, including a home run, while Kora MacKenzie had two hits, walked twice and scored three runs.

Jordan pitched the final 3 2/3 innings, striking out five and earning the win.

St. Thomas Aquinas 2

DOVER - Junior Abby Gaynor and the Saints exacted revenge in this rematch of last year's Division III semifinal game at Plymouth State University.

Gaynor struck out 14 and allowed two hits over seven innings, leading the Saints to their second win in as many games this season.

Amelia Anderson had three hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Saints, while Brielle Kelly had a hit and RBI, and Gaynor had a hit an scored a run.


Portsmouth 19

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Ben Purcell had five goals and two assists, and Zac Amend had four goals and three assists as Portsmouth opened its season with this non-league win in the Bay State.

Reilly Collins added three goals and two assists for Portsmouth, while Lucas Patten and Thijs Beelen both had two goals.

Portsmouth's Nick Smith was 18 for 22 on faceoffs, and also scored two goals. Portsmouth goalie Kai Paterson had six saves, and Masi Shone and Andy Brown shined defensively.

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine – Nate Fitch had four goals and two assists, and AJ Pavona and Ebbin Perkins both had four goals for Berwick Academy in this non-league win.

NASHUA - Jackson Emrich won 8-5 at No. 2 singles and Camden Smith won 8-4 at No. 6 singles for Spaulding (0-2) in this Division I loss.

HAMILTON, Mass. - Cam Bitter (No. 1), Reece Besset (No. 2) and Leo Beresin (No. 3) all lost in two sets in their respective singles matches for Berwick in this Eastern Independent League loss.

In doubles, Oalin Vivithana and Colin Bitter lost in No. 1 doubles, and Sam Jefferies and Ryan McCoughlin lost in No. 2.

HAMPTON - Stella Sebeny (No. 1, 8-0), Mia Botnick (No. 2, 8-0), Amelia Dumont (No. 3, 8-4) and Ava Sebeny (No. 4, 8-6) all won their respective singles matches for Winnacunnet (3-0) in this Division II match.

In doubles, Stella Sebeny and Botnick won 8-0 at No. 1, and Dumont and Ava Sebeny won 8-1 at No. 2.

HAMPTON - With the match tied at 15-15 in the fifth-and-decisive set, Eamon Furlong delivers two straight service points, leading the Warriors to their Division I season-opening win.

Bryce Molnar and Zach Baril also played well for Winnacunnet. Windham is 0-2.

Individual set scores were 25-19, 24-26, 18-25, 26-24, 17-15.
