Webb City advances to Class 5 District 7 semifinals

Mar. 1—The third-seeded Webb City Cardinals topped sixth-seeded Belton 60-50 on Thursday night in Kansas City at Pembroke Hill High School in the first round of Class 5 District 7 play.

Webb City (21-6) was led by Holton Keith's 26-point performance. It held a 25-15 lead at the break.

Belton (9-18) surged back with a 24-point third quarter to make it just 42-39 entering the final period. Its offense came from two players in double figures as George Shrum led the way with a double-double. Shrum tallied 16 points and 14 rebounds. Joining him in double figures was Kordell Williams with 12 points. Williams also collected nine rebounds.

The Cardinals earned the victory by holding Belton to just 11 points in the fourth quarter. The Pirates did not score double-digit points in either of the first two quarters.

A defensive performance carried Webb City.

The only other Cardinal scoring in double figures was Barron Duda with 17.

Webb City meets second-seeded Raytown (19-6). Raytown eliminated seventh seed Carl Junction on Thursday night by a score of 69-32. That ends the Bulldogs season with a 10-15 record.


No. 5 Carthage (15-11) had its season come to a close against No. 4 Raymore-Peculiar in a 62-47 defeat. The Tigers were playing in District 6.

In District 5, Neosho and Joplin also ended their respective seasons.

Neosho, seeded eighth, fell to top-seed Springfield Central 90-54. Joplin, seeded seventh, lost to second-seed Kickapoo 75-21.

Joplin finishes with a 4-23 record; Neosho finishes at 7-20.
