Standing at the top of the halfpipe, his spot on the 2018 U.S. Winter Olympic team still in doubt, Shaun White didn’t know what to do. He needed to score at least 94 in a qualifier at Snowmass Mountain to secure a ticket to PyeongChang.
“Throw the 14,” his coach, J.J. Thomas said.
The frontside double cork 1440 — a similar trick Shaun wrecked on back in October that put him in intensive care. Thomas wanted him to kick off his run — the one that could make or break his 2018 Olympic dreams — with it.
“Oh, uh, I don’t know,” Shaun replied.
What happened next is now part of the legend of Shaun White. Episode 7 of SnowPack: Shaun White and the U.S. Snowboard Team, follows White to the top of the halfpipe, to the bottom and is there when he gets a tear-inducing call from his mother.
