Now that former Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger is on to the next level, he has the the opportunity to propel himself in a way not many saw as realistic for him.

Ehlinger was widely viewed as a player who wasn’t likely to become an NFL starter, yet the potential was there to have a solid career as a backup. The former Longhorn entered his first NFL training camp with the hopes of battling alongside second-year quarterback Jacob Eason to become Carson Wentz’s primary backup.

However, now that Wentz is sidelined with a foot injury and his return date is unknown, the backup quarterback competition in Indianapolis has now turned into potentially starting a meaningful game or two for the Colts.

Many thought Eason had the job in the bag, but Ehlinger’s notorious grit and dedication have put him in a position to snatch the job.

Ehlinger preformed well in his first preseason game, where he completed 10-of-15 passes, averaging 10.3 yards per pass for 155 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 30 yards, and recorded the game tying two-point conversion.

His consistent performance in practice, and his solid NFL debut have put him in position to start Saturday’s preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings.

On Thursday, a video surfaced on Twitter of ESPN’s Mike Wells asking Ehlinger about his mindset on facing pressure early on his career, and the Colts’ sixth-round quarterback gave an inspiring and impressive answer for someone as young as he is.

Ehlinger has always been mature, but his thoughtfulness and outlook on life are what makes him special.

Whether or not Ehlinger wins the backup job or ever has a chance to start in the NFL is yet to be determined, but we do know that he will work his hardest and continue be a great role model along the way.
