The Kansas City Chiefs are set to kick off the NFL’s 2023 regular season with a Thursday night matchup against the Detroit Lions.
It’s a much-anticipated game with the Super Bowl-winning Chiefs against the rising Lions, who became a surprise success last year after finishing 9-8.
Detroit hopes to carry that momentum into this season while the Chiefs deal with a few missing stars from their squad: defensive lineman Chris Jones is holding out due to contract negotiations, DL Charles Omenihu is suspended, and tight end Travis Kelce is questionable to play due to a hyperextended knee sustained in practice.
Despite missing players, the X-factor is still quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who comes off an MVP and Super Bowl MVP season. It doesn’t get any better than that, so the question is whether he can do it back to back.
