Australian referee Jarred Gillett is causing quite a stir ahead of his move to England.
Gillett, an established A-League referee, is on his way to the English Football League as he is set to work in the Championship next season.
In his final game – an Australian top-flight match between Brisbane Roar and Western Sydney Wanderers – Gillett wore a microphone.
The footage was subsequently released and it makes for fascinating – and revealing – viewing.
Included are Gillett’s discussions with players and fellow officials as they make clear just how tough a referee’s job can be.
And, pivotally, it is a fascinating insight into how referees work alongside a video assistant referee ahead of the Premier League’s induction of the system next season.
The 32-year-old will become the first overseas referee in the history of English football when he moves to England’s second tier.
