Alex Smith's recovery from a broken leg and subsequent infections ranks as nothing short of incredible.
Doctors worried about Smith possibly losing not just his leg but his life in the weeks after the injury. The story was well documented by ESPN's Project 11, which aired last week and brought national attention to Smith's impressive perseverance.
Thursday marks Smith's 36th birthday, and to celebrate, his wife Elizabeth posted remarkable footage of Smith working out to her Instagram page.

Happy Happy Birthday to this handsome, hard working man❤️ The last week we've been overwhelmed with love, support and sweet messages. We cannot thank you enough. #project11 was a look into what the last 18 months have been (mostly Alex refusing to give up). I am in awe of his perseverance everyday. He just keeps getting stronger and refuses to give up... Forever grateful💋

If a picture is worth a thousand words, the videos of Smith going through very specific football drills might be priceless.
As the footage shows, Smith is miles down the road to full recovery. He can run and he can throw. He looks damn good in fact.
That doesn't mean he can sustain any contact on the surgically repaired leg, but frankly, this isn't the time for those questions. At some point, Smith's NFL comeback will become a real conversation, real or perceived. Thursday isn't that day yet.
For now, happy birthday Alex.
